The strike of the dress - Strikers III

In this time of student revolt and anger around the world (including here in Italy and Great Britain ), I thought to mention in the next few days historical contexts of strikes in which women have played a major role! Little is said about their participation in the excitement of association, and yet ...

can not talk about strikes women in Quebec not to mention the "strikes the rag" took place in 1934 and 1937, where no less 4000 and 5000 women were in the street.

Archives QFL. Strike of 1937.

I leave the beautiful Lea Roback, a communist, a feminist and a pioneer of the union, tell you about the working conditions of the time and context of these strikes. If you have time to listen to just one of the three links is this one that counts. ;)

The working conditions of these workers were horrible. They were paid by the piece, which means that most had to bring work home to survive. They were constantly thank you for their male supervisors. The average salary for 60 hours was 8-9 $, but the favorite could be more often in exchange for sexual favors. The foreman could send them back home in the morning without any explanation. Workplaces were not maintained, they had to rub dirt and vermin. The women had nothing to lose and that is why they are thrown into the fight.

With the strike of three weeks of 1937, women get the recognition of their union, the 44-hour week and a salary increase from $ 11 to $ 16 per week. I advise you

also this interview with a worker talking about their operating .

And finally a strike comes 40 years after the other and we talk about Madeleine Parent, another pioneer of trade unionism.
